What’s Romestead All About?
The best way to describe Romestead is ‘Stardew Valley visuals with action combat’, but it goes far beyond that simple label. This is an ambitious game from a small studio, and it could become an absolute gem in the genre.
Field Journal
Game Title: Romestead | Session: #1 (Public Demo) Date: Feb 21, 2026 | Hours Played: 2.3
Platform / Version: PC / Demo v0.21.1_3 | Location: First Biome
Mood Before: Curious | Mood After: Wait, 2 hours have past?
First Reaction Notes
- The physical carrying and throwing mechanic feels unique.
- The music is reminds me of TES: Oblivion.
- The animations feel fluid, the water reflections (when turned on) look whimsical.
- The Zombie Romans are a handful at right, animals can also engage them!
- The UI is clean and doesn’t get in the way of the art.
- Would be nice if you could see what tool you are using, be it the Axe or Pick-Axe when doing related activities.
GAME FEEL [X] Snappy | [ ] Sluggish | [ ] Weighty | [ ] Floaty [X] Relaxing (Day) | [X] Stressful (Night) | [ ] Chaotic | [ ] Controlled [ ] Fast Thinking | [X] Slow Thinking
Why: The game lets you take your time building during the day, but once the sun sets, the survival half kicks in. The snapping of building pieces, combat animation, and physics all look really nice.
CORE SYSTEMS OBSERVATION
- Main Gameplay Loop: Gather physical materials -> Build/Upgrade Town -> Explore Dungeons -> Survive the Night.
- Punishments: Loot drops on death, but more importantly, your town can be damaged if you don’t defend it properly.
- Surprises: Finding out the Ram looking animal can get staggered if they collide with a rock!
CHARACTER NOTES
- Character: Phalanx | First Impression: Good | Current Feeling: A god-blessed warrior.
- Character: Ghostly Women | First Impression: Had “Amnesia”, but started bringing down lighting from above to help with monsters| Current Feeling: Might be a demo helper
VISUAL + TECHNICAL OBSERVATIONS
- Art Direction: Gorgeous high-fidelity pixel art; very “modern retro.”
- Lighting: Exceptional use of warm vs. cool tones; fires and reflections look beautiful.
- Performance: Solid 60 FPS; very well optimized for the demo stage.
AUDIO & MUSIC
- Music Style: Reminds me of TES: Oblivion.
- Standout Tracks: None that stood out, but it does have a nice mellow feel.
FRUSTRATIONS
- Would be nice if you could see what tool you are using, be it the Axe or Pick-Axe when doing related activities.
WAIT THAT’S COOL
- Throwing resources on other bigger ones so they break is a cool idea.
- The cart, although 3D, works great! (Reminded me of Valheim)
The Tech Behind the Game
Under the hood, Romestead is built on the custom engine named Candide, using MonoGame and XNA frameworks. In a world dominated by Unity and Unreal, this is a bold, technical choice, one that I strongly approve. By using MonoGame, the developers have a massive amount of control over the game’s performance and rendering. It also explains why the game feels so snappy.
The Studio and Publisher
The game is the debut title from Beartwigs, an independent studio based in Linköping, Sweden. While the studio is new, their partner and publisher, Three Friends, includes people who were involved with Minecraft, Valheim, and Deep Rock Galactic.
Roadmap and Release Information
Beartwigs has confirmed that the Early Access release is slated for later in 2026.
The road ahead is packed. While the demo gives us two biomes and seven gods to worship, the full release aims to offer much more. Future updates are expected to include:
- Automated Logistics: Advanced buildings to help move resources across your growing colony.
- Expanded Bestiary: More mythological beasts pulled straight from Virgil and Ovid.
- Mounts and Carts: Upgradable transport systems for those long-distance dungeon hauls.
Would I Recommend It?: Absolutely, engaging single player experience, which only gets better, especially if you have a group of friends!
